The Tale of Two Brothers
Wouldn’t it be a bit boring if all the children in one family were just the same? I like this quote from Marcelene Cox: “Children in a family are like flowers in a bouquet: there’s always one determined to face in an opposite direction from the way the arranger desires.”[53]
In one Texas family I know, there is a variety of temperaments, starting with the oldest two boys. The firstborn son, Isaac, has always been bright and detail oriented. He is a rule follower and wants his siblings to follow rules too. He’s the “policeman” who can annoy the other children with his bossiness. Also, with a lower activity level than the other siblings, Isaac likes to sit and read, think, make things, or build Legos rather than run in the yard with his younger brother, Noah. Isaac is as cautious and reflective as Noah is adventurous and energetic.
When he begins a task or project, Isaac is persistent and focused, often not stopping for a snack or a break until he’s finished. When he received an excavation kit as a gift, he worked and hammered in the sand all day until he retrieved the pretend skull of a dinosaur. Noah was excited to help hammer at first, but got diverted, and after a few minutes, just played in the sand. Isaac is predictable and likes everything to be structured and scheduled.
Noah is more unpredictable, moody, and sensitive; Isaac is more reserved in his emotions. Independent Noah likes to do things on his terms and in his way. He’s better at athletics and loves to be active outdoors. Yet these are both wonderful boys, and as their personalities have developed and had room to grow in their family, they are becoming outstanding young men with their own temperament styles, interests, and gifts.
